Does anyone have experience transplanting irises (bearded and Siberian)? We are selling our house and I have hundreds of irises in my yard. I would like to take some with me. I have done this before, but in June, not February! Many of these irises belonged to my great-grandmother and came from North Carolina in the 1930s. Here in Oklahoma, right now our nighttime lows are in the upper 20s/lower 30s, and our daytime highs are ranging from 40 to 60. I am concerned that if I move them into temporary containers (long planters) they will die. I have heard you can dig them up and let them dry, but I am VERY concerned that they will die if I do that. Can I dig them up now and put them in planters? Or should I wait until our house is sold (hopefully within a couple of weeks) and do it then? My realtor suggested I ask the new homeowners if I can return in April and dig some up, but even though there are hundreds of them I'm worried they won't agree. As you can tell, I'm getting slightly panicked about this. These are not just plants; they're gifts from friends and relatives. Thanks!!... Read More »
